There's something that speaks to me about the simple format of this article… just three parts: 1) Sit Down 2) Shut Up and 3) Pay Attention. I also love the couple of really lovely stories that exemplify the ideas beautifully.
If you are considering trying to have a sitting meditation practice (or meditation practice of ANY sort really) check it out.
As for my favorite way to meditate. Give this a try. Think of breath awareness as the blue sky. When you are focused on breathing in, pausing, breathing out, pausing… you are focused on the blue sky. Then think of any other thoughts you might have as clouds… Did I switch the clothes to the dryer (cloud), how long have I been doing this (cloud), I'm hungry (cloud), I can't believe he/she said that (cloud), this isn't working (cloud).
Sit or lay down, bring your attention to the blue sky. If you catch yourself focused on a cloud, switch back to the sky. Do this OVER and OVER and OVER again. Never judge, never feel like you are doing it right or wrong. Just note that some days are cloudier than others. It's just the way it is.
